Cone taps Chua, Ronquillo as deputies
in ABC campaign

MANILA, July 3  -- After naming seven other players
which will complete the Philippine Basketball Association All-Star lineup, Tim Cone put fire and ice on his bench in his shot at achieving Asian glory one more time.

Cone tapped the services of firebrand Alfrancis Chua of Tanduay and calm and collected Perry Ronquillo of Shell Velocity as his deputies when the PBA All-Stars battle a selection of crack players coming from the member nations of the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC).

Chua and Ronquillo readily accepted Cone's offer to be his assistants in the one-game classic to be played Aug. 6 at the Araneta Coliseum as he completed his wish for the coaching staff and the lineup he feels have it to win.

With the nucleus of his team coming from the top five players in the All-Filipino Cup, Cone added a mix of youth and height recently by naming Johnny Abarrientos, Andy Seigel, Rodney Santos, Danny Ildefonso, Benjie Paras, Noy Castillo and Marlou Aquino to the team.

They will join Alvin Patrimonio, Eric Menk, Bong Hawkins, Danny Seigel and Kenneth Duremdes, who all won berths by finishing in the top five of the statistical points race in the AFC.

"We've got a team that can win and we have a coaching staff that is so balanced," Cone said when he informed the league of the coaching staff that he wanted. "Al is the temperamental type, while
Perry will always be cool and I can fit in perfectly in the middle."

Cone won the head coaching honor after winning the AFC and he chose the seven remaining slots in the team together with some officials of the Commissioner's Office and a representative from
the PBA Press Corps. But he decided on Chua and Ronquillo alone.

"Al and Perry have a presence on the floor that are distinctly unique and very effective," Cone added. "We can prepare well for any game with a coaching staff like this."

The All-Star game will be played Aug. 6 and the PBA Selection will be battling a side that will be made up of the best players in Asia. At least three members of the Chinese national team have been invited.

Seven-foot wonder Wang Zhizhi and 7-foot Yao Ming will make up the imposing Asian frontline, which will be backstopped by standouts from Korea, Japan and the former Soviet Republic.

The PBA All-Star Week this year will actually have two games on tap as the institutionalized Veterans vs. RDJ (Rookies, Sophomore, and Juniors) game will be played in Iloilo a week later.

The All-Star Fans Day will also be held in Iloilo starting Aug. 12 at the Colegio de San Agustin football field and the country's top players will be in attendance to sign autographs and mingle with the fans. (SNS)
