BASTA PINOY! PORTS REVIEW

R.P. bets `all in' in world pool championships

MANILA, July 4 -- Francisco "Django" Bustamante,
Leonardo "Dodong" Andam and Warren Kiamco advanced to the 64-man main draw to make it a perfect 5-of-5 for the Philippine Team in the $250,000 World Pool Championships at the Cardiff International Arena in Cardiff, Wales.

Bustamante, Andam and Kiamco joined early qualifiers defending champion Efren "Bata" Reyes and Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat in the 64-player knockout stage of this tournament offering $60,000 to the
champion.

The tough single-elimination main draw opens with a race-to-9 affair with the losers automatically receiving $1,000.

The qualifiers will be seeded according to their record in the elimination phase. Bustamante, seeded sixth in the tournament, blasted 27th seed Christian Reimering of Germany, 7-1, to emerge in second place in Group 6 with a 3-2 win-loss card behind unseeded Dave Matlock of the United States.
Andam, the winner of the recent $50,000 Match of the Masters where he conquered Reyes in the finals, escaped with a 7-6 victory over Tony Drago of Malta in Group 8 to advance.

Andam advanced in the next round with many-time Manila visitor Earl "The Pearl" Strickland, who topped the group with perfect 5-0 slate, Johl Younger and Edwin Montal.

Andam, who lost his last match against Strickland, 7-6 to finish with a 2-3 mark, emerged in a tie with Montal, a native of San Fernando, Pampanga but carries the maple leaf of Canada in the tournament. Montal defeated Andam, 7-4, in the second round.
Kiamco, for his part, had an easy time scoring a 7-3 victory over local bet Dominic Dale to finish the round-robin qualifying with a 3-2 slate just like veteran Nick "Kentucky Colonel" Varner in Group 4.

Reyes closed out his campaign with a split of his last two matches while Luat lost his last outing to Hui Kai Hsia of Taipei, 7-6.

Reyes, who scored three straight wins to claim a slot in the main draw, suffered his first defeat, a 6-7 loss at the hands of Ernesto Dominguez of Mexico.
Reyes bounced back with a 7-3 victory over 32nd seed Jose Luiz Perez of Venezuela to finish as co-leader in Group 1 with a 4-1 card like Dominguez.
Luat finished second place in Group 7 with a 3-2 mark behind seventh seed Marcus Chamat of Sweden (4-1). The notable names who failed to make it are veteran campaigner Jim Rempe of the United States and top snooker player and 21st seed Jimmy White, who ended up with just a 2-3 mark.

Jose Luiz Perez, seeded 32nd, and 27th ranked Christian Reimering also failed to hurdle the tough qualifying round.

But the biggest casualty was 10th seed Alex Lely of Holland, who wound up with a 2-3 card in Group 10.
Among the other qualifiers are Kim Davenport (USA), Lou Condo Jr. (Australia), Corey Deuel (USA), Vegar Kristiansen (Norway), Jon Kucharo (USA), Fabio Petroni (Italy), Chris Melling (England).

Ralf Souquet of Germany, Kunihiko Takahashi and Akukimo Toshikawa of Japan and Johnny Archer of the United States, who saw action in the Match of the Masters, also advanced to the next round.

Reyes will face 24th ranked Steve Davis of England in the next round while Bustamante will take on Niels Feyen of Holland.

Luat is expected to have a hard time against 15th seed Michael Coltrain of the United States while Andam will have 16th seed Tomas Engert of Germany as opponent.

Kiamco, for his part, takes on Shin Young-Park of Korea. (SNS)
