Team Caltex embarks on new crusade

MANILA, July 21  -- Team Caltex Philippines embarks
on a new crusade when the six-man squad campaign in three tough tournaments in Cuba.

The first event on tap in the team's 30-day stint in the
country known to be the haven of Olympic boxing champions, will be the Cordova Cardin world ranking championships on July 28 to 30.

Olympics-bound light welterweight Romeo Brin, lightweight Larry Semilliano, and brothers Arlan (flyweight) and Danilo Lerio (lightflyweight), together with reserves Anthony Igusquiza (featherweight) and Roel Laguna (bamtamweight), will then proceed
to Havana for the Roberto Balado Cup and the International Juvenile championships.

"This will be a tough task for this squad which is preparing for the Sydney Olympics. The boxers really need this tournaments in their buildup for the Games where the Philippines is eyeing its first-ever Olympic gold medal," commented Manny Lopez, president of
the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

"This team had its stint against European, American and Asian boxers and after their first competition against Latin Americans last month in Mexico, they will be in their first tournaments against South Americans prior to the Olympics," said Lopez, whose
firm, Pacific Heights, is bankrolling the team's pre-Olympic training in partnership with Caltex Philippines, Inc., Philippine Sports Commission and Adidas Phils.

The team also includes Cuban consultant Raul Liranza, head coach Nolito "Boy" Velasco, assistant coach Patricio Gaspi and AIBA International referee/judge Roger Fortaleza.

The team, based in Baguio since May this year, will return to Australia on Aug. 15 for final preparation in the Games set Sept. 15 to Oct. 1. (SNS)
