Former Bujidnon Rep. Jose Zubiri, executive director of the National Basketball Hall of Fame Foundation, announced in the PSA forum that the other inductees are Rafael Hechanova Jr., Francisco Vestil and Antonio Martinez. "We have received a lot of suggestions and had at least 24 nominations but decided that after a through screening process, these athletes would be our next batch of inductee," said Zubiri. The late Mumar, a native of Talibon, Bohol, was a former
Olympian who saw action in the 1948 London Olympic Games aside from
R.P. team stints in the 1951 Manila and 1954 New Delhi Asian Games Known for his crafty -- some said "dirty" -- style, Mumar was also the captain of the Philippine team that won third place in the 1954 world basketball championship in Rio de Janeiro, the best finish ever by the nationals in international competition. Hechauova, now a successful businessman, was voted by the PSA as Mr. Basketball in 1951 and a member of the multi-titled YCO squad which dominated local basketball in the 50's and early 60's. Although largely unknown by Luzon basketball fans, Vestil was an outstanding Cebuano cager who played for the Visayan Institute, now known as the University of Visayas. Vestil was a member of the University of Santo Tomas, coached by the legendary Herminio Silva, which went unbeaten enroute to winning the 1948 Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines basketball championship. A two-time Olympian, Martinez, earned the monicker of "P-38" for his uncanny knack of intercepting balls. (SNS) REQUEST FOR A COMPLIMENTARY COPY Refresh
