BASTA PINOY! SPORTS REVIEW

Sydney to welcome Olympics participants with open arms

MANILA, July 28  -- "We will welcome to the (2000
Sydney) Olympic Games Village 15,000 participants (10,000 athletes and 5,000 officials) with open arms. We will make their stay comfortable and memorable."

Thus declared Sallyanne Atkinson, Olympic Village deputy mayor, at the Australian Embassy in Makati during a press conference which was also attended by Salvador Andrada, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) first vice president and R.P. Olympic delegation chef de mission, and POC secretary general Romeo Ribano.

Atkinson added that the Olympic Village is "right where the action will be. It is close to practically all the venues of the Games (set on Sept. 15-Oct. 2)."

"From the Village, one can see the main stadium, the swimming pool and the other venues," she said.

According to Atkinson, who is also special representative for Queensland in Southeast Asia and former Brisbane lord mayor, the Australian organizers have "created a new town (at Homebush Bay) for the venues and the Olympic (and Media) Village only eight kilometers away from the Sydney Harbor."

"The 198 participating countries will all be welcomed during special ceremonies the moment they get into the (Olympic) Village," said Atkinson.

"We will honor officials and athletes of three countries at a time in rites for 15 minutes."

During the welcome ceremony, the country's flag will be raised and its national anthem played, added Atkinson.

Atkinson said Australia was honored and proud to host the Olympic Games a second time. She's also happy to learn that Melbourne earned the right to stage the Games in 1956 by a slim 21-20 vote of the International Olympic Committee and that the
winning vote came from then IOC representative to the Philippines, the late Jorge Vargas. (SNS)
