BASTA PINOY! SPORTS REVIEW

R.P. TEAM BATTLES TAIPEI FOR 3RD SPOT

TAIWAN, July 29  -- Team FedEx-Philippines fell to a
tall but swift New Zealand side, 37-67, and was relegated to the battle for third in the 23rd William Jones Cup International Basketball Tournament at the Gymnasium of Taipei Physical Education here.

Coming off a big upset win over Japan, the nationals however could not summon the same intensity and fire against their Olympic-bound foes who pulled off the 30-point romp to secure a finals berth against Korea.

The Philippines, represented by the Laguna Lakers of the Metropolitan Basketball Association, will dispute third place against host Taipei, which dropped a 78-87 decision to the Koreans in the other semifinals contest.

The Kiwis played a deliberate halfcourt game against the terribly outsized Filipinos, who appeared to have been scouted very well as they failed to capitalize on their three-point shooting and fastbreaks the way they did against the Japanese.

The first half alone told the story how outclassed the
nationals were as they trailed, 16-33 at the half.

Boasting of two burly six-foot-nine forwards in Robert Hickey and Tony Rompton and another pair of quick-moving seven-foot slotmen Pero Carcon and Peter Pokai, the Kiwis outrebounded the Filipinos, 38-18 giving no opportunity at all for second chance
points.

Chris Clay, one of two Fil-American players in the R.P. lineup, topscored with a game-high 16 points while Jasper Ocampo, the hero in the nationals' 93-82 win against Japan, was held to six. (SNS)
