STAGES OVERWHELM LETRAN 61-54

MANILA, July 29  -- What defending champion Letran
lacks is a prolific pointguard like San Sebastian's Christian Coronel.

The veteran 5'9 sentinel, a member of the national 20-under team, sank 30 points, including eight triples as he keyed the Stags' 61-54 victory over the Knights in the eliminations of the 76th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCA) seniors basketball at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

San Sebastian actually trailed almost throughout the first half but Coronel took matters into his own hands as he drilled in three triples and a jumper in an 18-4 comeback that saw a 25-28 deficit turn to a 43-32 margin, 11:41 left in the final half.

Six-foot-five slotman Aniel Reinhard Syhongpan, together with veterans Jason Nicolas and Richard Gutierrez, tried to get the Knights back on track as they managed to trim the gap to just eight, 41-49, with 2:46 seconds remaining.

But multi-titled coach Turo Valenzona told his wards to put pressure on the rivals' big men and it proved effective in holding Letran scoreless in the stretch. (SNS
