FOUR PINOY PUGS ASSURED OF BRONZE

BALI, Indonesia, Aug. 1  -- Four Filipino fighters
made one sure thing here, they are not leaving this paradise island empty-handed.

After bantamweight Rico Moreno assured himself of a bronze medal, the three other R.P. team members followed suit, winning their separate quarterfinal bouts, in the 19th President's Cup International Amateur Boxing Championships at the Grand Bali Beach here.

Lightflyweight Harry Tanamor bucked a slow start to defeat Rosema Colney of India, 19-9, while Joel Bariga proved to classy for Kosmos Awon of Indonesia whom he beat via a Referee-Stop-Contest (RSC-outclassed) in their lightweight bout.

Welter Junie Tizon, in contrast, found his Australian foe Daniel Geale a hard nut to crack as he needed a final round rally before escaping with scary 14-13 decision.

Tanamor bounced back from a 2-4 first-round deficit, coming up with a variety of punches that startled his Indian opponent. A vicious uppercut hit Colney on the chin for a standing eight-count.

"Gigil kasi sa first round kaya walang focus. Sabi ko laruin muna saka ko pinapukpok," said R.P. team coach Orlando Tacuyan.

Tanamor grabbed a 15-9 lead after the third round, then went on a hit-and-run tactic in the final, earning him more points en route to the lopsided win and a semifinal slot.

He aims for a final berth and automatic silver medal against Noppadol Kongchana, a 17-4 victor against Indonesian Dickson Ton.

Barriga spent most of the first round sizing up his opponent before pouring his wrath in the second and third, racking up points one after another with punches coming from every conceivable angle.

A right cross to the head triggered the buzzer, signalling the end of the fight with Barriga already leading by 15 points, 12-6 in the 33rd second of the fourth round.

"Pagkatapos ng first round alam kong kaya ko ang kalaban.

Hindi ko na pinaporma sa mga sumusunod na rounds," said Barriga, who will vie for a final slot against the hard-hitting Michael Katsidis of Australia.

Katsidis set a meeting with Barriga after postling a similar RSC-outclassed win over Asheri M. of Iran.
Packing power punches, the Olympics-bound Australian dominated Tizon in the first three rounds where both fighters, obviously showing respect to each other, threw few punches.

Trailing by two points at the start of the fourth, Tizon
arduously worked his way to the body before going to the head to outpoint Geale.

"Pinagtrabaho ko muna sa tiyan para bumuka ang depensa sa ulo.

Ang concentration kasi ng kalaban puro sa mukha," said Tacuyan.

Tizon goes for a final slot against Bara Gomes of Indonesia.

Armyman Rico Moreno earned the R.P. team's first medal after thwarting Ahadi A of Iran in their bantamweight quarterfinals.

He aims for a final slot when he takes on Yuugi Kimura of Japan. (SNS)

WBA title fight set Aug. 9

MANILA, Aug. 1  -- World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan Asia welterweight champion Fernando Sagrado of the Philippines will face top challenger Jef Malcolm of Australia at the Elorde Sports Center boxing arena on Aug. 9.

Sagrado, who is making his third title defense, promised to finish off Malcolm in the early rounds. However, the Australian is no pushover as he is a veteran of several international
championships.

Malcolm is determined to snatch Sgarado's crown and get his world ranking.
At present, Sagrado is busy doing rounds of sparring at the Elorde gym where he makes his daily workouts under the watchful eye of his trainer, Eddie Ballaran.

Eddie is making sure that his ward gets the correct phasing. With a week to go before the big fight, Sagrado is almost making it to the 147-lb. weight limit and in top condition. (SNS)
