KALEIDOSCOPE 2000: Fil-Ams Win Award

WEST PALM BEACH, FL — The United-Filipino American Association of West Palm Beach County (UNIFIL) and the Gold Coast Community School bested 11 participants to be one of the top three winners by earning 3rd prize in the Kaleidoscope 2000 held last Feb. 6 at East Library grounds on Flagler Drive, East Palm Beach.

West Palm Beach Mayor Joel Daves presented the award and prize through the Filipino community’s Ms. Zee Watson and Ms. Dorothy McKennon of the Gold Coast Community School.

The celebration was joined by 14 different cultural groups each paired with a Palm Beach County public school in presenting creative displays showcasing their country through art, dress, music, traditions and famous landmarks. Also highlighted were each country’s traditional music, dance and exotic foods.
School children discovered arts, culture and culinary delicacies from the Philippines as members of the UNIFIL spent time teaching students various native dances and educating them about its customs and heritage.

The Villages of the World highlight featured "villages" from Africa, Brazil, Finland, French Caribbean, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Philippines, South America and Spanish Carribean.

Highlights, awards and prizes aside, the event showed how people from different cultures can effectively learn and share from each other for the betterment of their communities. In this event, the children taught their adult cotemporaries how it should be done. And West Palm Beach Fil-Ams are proud they contributed to this end. (BASTA PINOY NEWS /ERC)
