NANAY Broward
Wins July 4th Float Award
Dressed in their native costumes, they stood and waved at the crowd as their decorated float, with an inscription that said Celebrate with our Seniors Our Heritage NANAY Broward joined the other two floats of Philippine American Association of South Florida (PAASFI, celebrating the Youth) and DINGGIN (celebrating the Young Adults). The youth danced on the bangko while the DINGGIN choir sang the Star Spangled Banner, as they slowly passed through hundreds of spectators on the streets. After the parade in Plantation, the three united floats again joined the July 4th parade in Sunrise.
A panel of judges rated more than 40 floats as entry categories.
Thanks to the
spirited singing of DINGGIN, the Philippine float entry garnered the MUSICAL
UNIT AWARD plaque from the City of Sunrise. The celebration theme that was
presented by the three united groups must have resonated with the people and
officials of the City of Plantation who awarded PAASFI-DINGGIN-NANAY and the
Filipino Community with THE BEST FLOAT ENTRY trophy.
It was all
worth the effort. This is all for us! said Dency Barrias, President of
PAASFI, and Cora Barrias, director of NANAY and Dinggin, who spent
sleepless nights planning, coordinating and decorating the float entry. A real
show of community support was provided by Jose and Perlita Espejo, Greg and
Ester Esteban, Oscar and Linda Ranchez, Alden and Jojie Arteza, Marietta
Hardwick, Alex Battad, Rochit Raquipo and her children, Cora Barrias, Art
and Marylou Bernal who helped with the decorations.
DINGGIN
Singers Emy Lomibao, Bles Chavez, Anna Lewis, Jinky del Socorro, Clavel Opada,
Dawn Eco, Joe Eco and Oro Eco sang in the parade, while PAASFI
members Jose Espejo, Alex Battad, Cora Barrias, Cecille Eco, Marylou Bernal,
Rochit Raquipo and the children were in the Youth Float. NANAY-Broward
officer Linda Ranchez accompanied the elders Aling Naty, Aling Bibay, Aling
Rufing, and members Luis and Lisa in the Senior float.
Another elder, Aling Noring, was so excited about the parade that she
ran a temperature and missed all of the excitement. Elmo Eco, Luis,
and Bennie Trinidad (NANAYs administrator) drove the floats, while
Oro and Luis provided the two pick-up trucks. NANAY President Joy Bruce
and Sony Trinidad, NANAY Director of Services, also attended the
event.
