PROGRAM SCHEDULE

2002 Asian Pacific Film Festival
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Pila Balde /
Philippines

1999 / drama / 96 min / Tagalog w/English subtitles

Director: Jeffrey Jeturian / Producer: Lily Monteverde / Principal Cast: Ana Capri, Marcus Madrigal, Harold Pineda

Pila Balde tells the story of  pretty 18-year-old Gina, who ekes out a living by selling fried bananas and helping her Lola Cion do laundry jobs for the tenement residents of a slum community.  With her mother dead and her father in prison for armed robbery, Gina serves as surrogate parent to her brother Boyet and her sister Maria while she entertains dreams of a better future.  The film also tells the story of the slum dwellers as they go about their daily business with remarkable insouciance. They have little time to grieve over personal tragedies, nor to reflect over moral scruples.  Whenever time allows, they try to have fun, to love, to hope, and to dream-no matter if the hopes are baseless and the dreams elusive.

Pila Balde was awarded the NETPAC jury award at the 1999 CineManila International Film Festival in Manila, Philippines, and the gold award at the 2000 Worldfest International Film Festival in Houston, Texas.

Sat., Oct. 19, 4PM
Fri., Oct. 25, 8PM

Bang Rajan: The Legend of the Village Warriors / Thailand

2001 / drama, action / 114 min / Thai, Burmese w/English subtitles

Director: Tanit Jitnukul / Producers: Adirek Wattaleela, Nonzee Nimibutr / Principal Cast: Jaran Ngamdee, Winai Kraibutr, Bongkoj Khongmalai, Theerayut Pratyabamrung

Based on a true story, the legend of Bang Rajan is an extraordinary tale about ordinary villagers who fought against Burmese invaders in 18th century Siam. When King Mangra ascended the Burmese throne, he sent a huge army to attack the former Thai capital city of Ayutthaya by two different routes.  But  they were held apart  by the small village of Bang Rajan.  Against all odds, the villagers repeatedly repelled the armies and chose to sacrifice their own lives before becoming slaves to the Burmese empire.   Siam remained in disarray until King Taksin the Great reunited the Siamese people into the single sovereignty that exists today.

Sun., Oct. 20, 12PM

The Iron Ladies / Thailand

2001 / comedy / 104 min / Thai w/English subtitles

Director: Youngyooth Thongkonthun / Producer: Visute Pealvoralaks / Principal Cast: Jesdaporn Pholdee, Sahaphap Tor, Ekachai Buranapanit, Giorgio Maiocchi, Kokkorn Benjathikoon, Shiriohana Hongsopon

Based on the true story of the 1996 Thai national volleyball champions, The Iron Ladies is an inspiring and amusing “sports underdog” story.  Mon, the team leader, and his friend Jung are very talented players who constantly fail to be selected for various club teams because they’re gay.  Their chance comes when a new coach (Coach Bee) is selected by the Provincial Government to put together a winning team.  When the Coach selects both Mon and Jung to be on the team, almost all of the more macho players resign in protest.  The Coach then asks Mon to find a few of his friends to join the team.  They select Nong, A gay sergeant in the army, Pia, a transsexual star of a local cabaret show, her boyfriend Chat; and Wit, the only son of a Thai-Chinese family whose parents don’t know that their son is gay.   While it’s not the average men’s volleyball team, Coach Bee makes sure it’s the best one, despite its flamboyant group of gays, transsexuals, and one straight man.   The team slowly comes together, begins to play like champions, and start to prepare for the national championships…

The Iron Ladies is to men’s Thai volleyball as Cool Runnings is to men’s Jamaican bobsled team.

War and Peace / India

2002 / documentary / 176 min / Hindi and Japanese w/English subtitles

Director: Anand Patwardhan

Producer: Anand Patwardhan

Filmed over three years in India, Pakistan, Japan, and the United States, War & Peace delves into the era of “nuclear nationalism” fifty years (and 3 Indo-Pakistani wars) after nuclear testing began. The film examines the politics of the Asian countries as well as the “might is right” doctrine of the United States, comparing their rhetoric with the damaging effects of uranium on villagers living near test sites. The final section looks at the legacy of the nuclear bomb as Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors share their stories.   With border tensions escalating after September 11, reflecting on the militarization of these two nations is more important than ever.

2002 awards for War & Peace include the grand prize at the Earth Vision Global Environment Festival in Tokyo, Japan, and the best film and international jury prize at the Mumbai International Film Festival in Mumbai, India.

Tuhog (Larger Than Life) / Philippines

2000 / drama / 109 min / Tagalog w/English subtitles

Director: Jeffrey Jeturian / Producer: Lily Monteverdo / Principal Cast: Ina Raymundo, Klauida Koronel, Jaclyn Jose

Tuhog tells the poignant and provocative story of a woman and her daughter, who are both raped by the same man--the woman’s father and the girl’s grandfather. As mother and daughter struggle to overcome their pain and confusion, a film director--hoping to make his comeback film, approaches them with the idea of using their story. Frightened but intrigued, the women agree only to realize that they are reliving the horror of their experiences.

Jeturian’s gentle, yet astute approach to the complexities of the material, allows the film to explore the disturbing relationship between the victim and the victimizer.  He offers a devastatingly honest critique (Filipino, American or otherwise) that values lurid, graphic images of suffering and debasement, far above the respect, dignity, and integrity of any human being.  With grace, wit, and stunning performances by the cast, Tuhog gives us the very best that film can offer—it provokes, inspires, challenges –and we FEEL.

2002 awards for Tuhog include the gold award at the Worldfest International Film Festival in Houston, Texas. Tuhog was also chosen for national distribution by Cinevision at the 2002 New York Asian American International Film Festival.

Two children, Gita and Radha, are stranded in the no man’s land between two worlds that dominate contemporary childhood: school and home.  This in-between land is one of myriad dreams, fears, and fantasies all yearning to take the shape of a free fluid space where children can summon whichever spirit they like. The two young friends are on their way back from the school as they recount their dreams in this subliminal space available only to childhood.

Saree was selected for the 1999 Berlin Festival, and in 2000 it was the inaugural film at the Soorya Festival in Trivandrum, Kerala (India), and the Mambai International Film Festival in Mumbai, India.

Warm Water Under a Red Bridge / Japan

2001 / comedy / 119 min / Japanese w/ English subtitles

Director: Shohei Imamura

Producer: Hisa lino

Principal Cast: Koji Yakusho, Misa Shimizu

“The battle ends when your dick goes limp,” an old waterfront philosopher intones to middle-aged Yosuke, urging him to seize the day and seek out a mysterious treasure the old man hid in a tiny village years ago. Sad, unemployed, and afraid of his own wife, Yosuke heads for the coast and does find a treasure, but it’s not quite the one he imagined. Instead he meets lonely, but radiant Saeko, who explodes with more than moans when they make love.  Yosuke settles into the sleepy town, takes a job as a fisherman, and searches secretly for the treasure--not quite realizing that he already possesses a boundless beauty.

Director Shohei Imamura’s ever earthy and euphorically youthful outlood, combinedwith the wisdom and humor of his  75 years, infuses every frame of this  deliriously funny, sexy, life-affirming film.

"Yakusho garners laughs as the befuddled suitor, ands Shimizu is sweetly charming as the woman who is a boon to the local fisherman…" – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
