Two men escape from kidnappers

ZAMBOANGA CITY, July 25  -- A male teacher and a seminarian have escaped from the hands of separate kidnap gangs near this southern city.

Nelson Trentar told police he swam to safety before dawn July 24 while his kidnappers were asleep on nearby Sacol island.

He left behind two female teachers in the gunmen's custody. The three were snatched from the town of Naga, about 200 kms. northeast of Zamboanga two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, unknown gunmen abducted a young man studying for the priesthood at a Roman Catholic seminary here before dawn July 25, but the victim managed to escape several hours later, police said.

Rolando Guevarra told Zamboanga police he awoke to find the gunmen inside his room. The gunmen seized him when they could not find the priest who runs the seminary.

He said he kicked his guard while their van sped away and jumped off the vehicle. Residents of a village on the outskirts of Zamboanga helped lead him to a police station.

Insp. Allan Lazaro told reporters they have no suspects in the kidnap attempt. (SNS)
