STAR: TARA TAMBUNTING

Sophisticated beauty

COMING from a family that owns a successful chain of pawnshops, Therese Aurora or Tara Tambunting was born in the U.S. with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth.

She doesn't really have to join showbiz but she's now trying to make a name for herself as a female rocker. "As early as three years ago, I wanted to try it na but my lola and my dad were against it," she says. "Pero hilig ko talaga. My mom, a lawyer, also sings. I got my genes from her. When my lola passed away, my dad eventually gave his permission. When he saw me perform in my Music Museum concert last October, he became proud of me. Kaya ko raw pala."

Born on August 6, 1989, she's a high school senior at the British School at the Fort. She started singing in February last year at FunnSide, Timog Avenue. She has since sang in other venues and also hosted shows at NBC Tent, South Forbes and the DOH.

So, why did she choose to be a rocker? "I grew up with the songs being played by my dad like Led Zeppelin. My favorites are Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin and Marilyn Manson. I write my own songs and some people nga tell me I have to be more masa and do pop songs. Siguro I can do some ballads, but I don't want to go down to the exact level of the masa.

I want to meet them halfway. Like I don't see myself doing Britney Spears. Ang dami nang teen pop and R&B singers. I want to be different naman."

She took formal voice lessons and is now learning opera from tenor Nolyn Cabahug.

"The training helps a lot so I can do a wide range of music."

Very well traveled, she just returned from Nepal where they visited the Himalayas. "I love exotic places like Greece and Egypt."

She's now preparing her first album for BMG Records. "I wrote the carrier single, 'Fall Girl.' It's about my crush in school but he doesn't know I wrote it for him."

She's never had a boyfriend. "Ok lang sa parents ko magpaligaw but I haven't really found the right guy yet."

After high school, she wants to major in political science. "I want to be a lawyer like my mom and maybe, later, venture into politics." Tara is guesting in Erik Santos' "Paskong Pasasalamat" concert on December 3. On December 10, she sings for Bantay Bata in Bulacan and on December 14, she performs at Bagaberde Roxas Blvd. with MYMP, Jay-R and Annapolis Experiment. On February 16, she'll hold her first anniversary in showbiz concert at the Music Museum. (PNS)
